In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. At a time often marked by bleakness, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and helped it become a breakout hit.
On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and championed its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this endearing family navigate their daily lives.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to help comedy break out of its long-running sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well be part of that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to experience the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
