The British designer Antony Price, the influential style architect responsible for a series of unforgettable images favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.

He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, such as the soft-colored suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."

This news arrives less than a month after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he began designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he started creating outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included several ensembles for her American tour following her marriage.

Following a profession lasting half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The industry says farewell to a authentic original whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
