Accounts surfaced of multiple detonations and the noise of low-altitude planes in the Venezuelan capital in the small hours of the weekend. The event has led to claims from Venezuela's government and calls for international scrutiny.
The socialist administration has condemned the United States of what it calls "imperialist aggression," alleging that ex- President Trump reportedly authorized strikes against the Latin American nation. In an public announcement, the government stated that strikes had impacted Caracas and three other provinces: Miranda state, La Guaira, and Aragua.
"The only objective of this aggression is to take control of Venezuela's natural resources, in particular its oil and minerals," Venezuela asserted.
Venezuelan officials urged the international community to denounce the strikes, which it labeled a "flagrant violation of international law" that endangered countless of lives at risk in jeopardy.
Locals spoke of feeling roughly multiple explosions around 2:00 AM in the morning. Citizens in several areas reportedly ran into the streets outside.
"The earth trembled. It was frightening. We experienced explosions and jets in the sky," stated one local.
Black smoke was observed rising from key military installations in Caracas: the La Carlota airfield and the Fuerte Tiuna army base, where leader Maduro is thought to live.
The leader of neighboring Colombia, stated on social media that "Right now they are striking Venezuela... bombing it with missiles." He requested an immediate meeting of the UN Security Council.
The Colombian government, which just joined the Security Council, stated it would activate defense plans at its border with Venezuela.
The alleged attacks follow a extended pressure campaign by the US against the Maduro administration. Beginning in August, authorities reported a substantial American military presence off Venezuela's northern coast and a series of airstrikes on boats suspected of drug trafficking.
Venezuela's administration has declared "the implementation of emergency" and ordered all national defence measures to be initiated. It has also summoned its political forces to mobilize and "reject this external aggression."
US authorities and the US Department of Defense have not immediately addressed inquiries for a statement regarding the reports.
