Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.
The location, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in central Syria.
"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of entry passages providing entry to the site... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.
British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.
"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were thousands of British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, shows how British military are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."
Last December, the American forces executed what it called a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN reports IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
