The Academy Award-nominated actor Diane Ladd left us 89 years old.
This actor, whose credits spanned Chinatown, died at her home at her Ojai, California home. This announcement was announced via an announcement by her offspring, Academy Award-winning star Laura Dern, her daughter.
Dern, who starred with her mother in several movies such as Wild at Heart, described her as “my wonderful hero as well as my profound gift as a mother”, noting that she was at her bedside when she passed.
“She was an exceptional daughter, mother, grandmother, star, artist as well as compassionate soul that only dreams could have seemingly created,” she wrote. “We were blessed to have her. Her spirit soars with angels.”
Her initial acting years saw minor parts in television programs like The Fugitive whereas that decade saw her starring next to the legendary Jack Nicholson in Chinatown.
That very year, the year 1974, she shared the screen with Ellen Burstyn in Scorsese’s praised film the movie Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Her role brought Ladd her first Oscar nomination in the supporting actress category.
Throughout the 1980s, she starred in crime thriller Black Widow plus comedy sequel National Lampoon’s holiday comedy and also took part in the show Alice, a television series derived from her earlier movie.
In the subsequent decade, she was given an additional supporting actress Academy Award nomination for her performance in David Lynch’s Wild at Heart, a cult classic where she acted as the mom of her actual daughter Laura Dern’s role. The next year she received another nomination for her role in the film Rambling Rose which also starred her daughter.
“This was the film which Princess Diana selected as her very favorite, and she invited me and Laura to London for a premiere and an event in our honor,” Ladd shared about the film Rambling Rose. “She sat with us, grasping our hands, with tears, watching us perform.”
The nineties featured performances in comedy The Cemetery Club joining her again with Burstyn, Primary Colors, a satirical film, featuring John Travolta and Payne’s the movie Citizen Ruth where she acted as Laura Dern’s mom again. Those years also saw her score Emmy nominations for performances on Dr Quinn, Grace Under Fire, a sitcom and Touched by an Angel, a drama.
She persisted in performing alongside her daughter in films blending humor and drama Daddy and Them, Lynch’s Inland Empire and White’s comedy-drama series Enlightened. She also appeared next to actress Sandra Bullock in 28 Days, a movie, Anthony Hopkins, a legend in The World’s Fastest Indian plus Jennifer Lawrence in Joy.
Her later TV roles consisted of the series Ray Donovan and Young Sheldon, a comedy.
She also authored and helmed the humorous movie Mrs Munck featuring herself and previous spouse actor Bruce Dern. “Bruce is a talented star,” she said. “I’m privileged to have directed him in a film. Indeed, I stand as the only woman in recorded history to helm a film with her ex. I make a joke: ‘I tell women, if you seek payback, direct your ex-husband.’ Though I’m just teasing.”
She happened to be a family member of Tennessee Williams, who she called “a major inspiration on my life”.
In 2018, she received an incorrect diagnosis with a pulmonary condition and informed she only had half a year left but she regained full health when her daughter shifted her to a different hospital.
“If you can take your pain and avoid letting it accumulate like a sore or something, instead apply it to explore, to make the path clearer for yourself and others, then you are triumphing,” Ladd expressed.
