Gavin Newsom, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he plans to make a decision about whether to run for president in 2028 after the 2026 congressional elections wrap up.
"Yeah, it would be dishonest otherwise," Newsom remarked when asked about seriously considering a White House bid post the 2026 elections. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I can't do that."
The governor's current term as governor ends in January 2027, and he cannot run again. But, he emphasized that any determination is still years away.
"It's up to destiny," he said.
The California governor has stepped forward as a prominent opponent of the former president's team, using his social media accounts and advocating for a initiative that would increase Democratic congressional seats in response to GOP gerrymandering. This strategy has made him a target from political opponents.
Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, accused that Newsom is indifferent about the state's residents in a Sunday appearance on a major news network. The secretary disclosed intentions to withhold taxpayer dollars from the state and threatened suspending the state's ability to provide trucking licenses.
"I plan to withdraw $160 million from California," he said, in the wake of a recent fatal crash in California involving an undocumented commercial driver that resulted in loss of life and injured individuals.
His administration pointed out that the federal government had approved the worker's status on several occasions, which permitted him to receive a trucking license under national regulations.
The transportation secretary had before stated he was blocking additional funds from the state for failing to implement language proficiency rules for commercial drivers.
"One-time television figure, now Secretary of Transportation, still doesn't understand U.S. regulations," the governor's team retorted in a previous comment addressing Duffy's threats. "Meanwhile, in contrast to this person, we focus on reality: The state's CDL holders had a accident mortality rate much lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the single state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Facts don't lie. The Trump administration does."
A recently conducted poll revealed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and almost half of voters indicated that Newsom must consider running for president in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, public support for the governor has risen to an typical level of 33.5% from approximately 30%, while his negative ratings has dropped from an mean of more than 40% to current figures.
In previous months, Newsom remarked while on a trip several swing states that he had "no clue" about his future for the next presidential election.
He also referenced his earlier challenges, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the early childhood.
"The notion that a individual who got 960 on his SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was always in the back of the classroom – that such a possibility is discussed is, in and of itself, amazing," he commented. "Who the hell knows? I await who steps forward in 2028 and who rises to the occasion. And that is the issue for the voters."
