Manchester United Poised to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Signing for United

Schüller, who has half a year left on her deal, is known as a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing is viewed as a major coup for the WSL team.

Departure from Munich was expected since she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the club's supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top forwards. Per reports, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.

Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Attack

The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a significant boost to the team's forward line. She has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Gathering Steam at Old Trafford

Securing the German international coincides with a period when the club appear to be gathering momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought further business:

  1. The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official stated: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
