Weather experts are saying a frosty beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation anticipated over large parts of the UK. Celebrants have been told to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay events are expected to go ahead, following last year's postponement. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be needed," said the weather service.
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is likely to be ideal for fireworks displays, with dry conditions and open skies. Readings are due to be cold, making extra layers essential, said forecasters.
In more northern areas, skies will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.
Heading into Friday, snow alerts are in place across Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.
Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to fall even more as snowfall and high winds are expected to hit the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
Meanwhile, amber cold health alerts have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Officials stated this indicated the weather could to cause major effects across the NHS and care systems. This includes a potential rise in the mortality rate among vulnerable individuals or those aged 65 or over.
The advice for all is clear: to see the new year in security, wrapping up warm is utterly essential.
