Outrage Explodes as Trump's Post on Rob Reiner Spurs Widespread Backlash

Personalities from both sides of the partisan divide and the Hollywood world are uniting to censure Donald Trump for his comments in the wake of the shocking passing of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

An Inflammatory Online Statement

Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Los Angeles home, Trump posted on social media to label the deceased director as "tortured and suffering". The post, he claimed Reiner's demise was "because of the hostility he caused others through his enormous, unyielding, and untreatable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

The post quickly shifted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".

Police Update and Detention

Police have since announced the arrest of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in connection with the case. Reports indicate his bail was set at a substantial sum.

A Torrent of Criticism from Public Figures

The response to Trump's post was swift and scathing.

This is a appalling and vile statement,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a close acquaintance, also condemned the statements. She pointed to previous comments from Trump regarding political violence, asking, "Have you no shame? Can you get any lower?"

California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "This is a disturbed man."

Echoing this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a despicable piece of trash."

Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own murder because they didn’t support him. So sick."

Criticism from Within Party

A number of Republican elected officials also voiced disapproval.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". Greene also mentioned struggles with substance abuse and psychological well-being some families face.

Fellow Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disrespectful" considering the nature of the deaths. He publicly challenged others in his party to justify the comments.

The Director's Legacy and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. In a previous interview, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also warned about the risks of authoritarian rule if Trump return to power.

"We see authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a danger that democratic systems crumble around the world."

Regardless of his strong criticisms, Reiner had previously expressed "complete revulsion" and condemned violence for political ends unequivocally following the killing of another individual.

A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal

Adding a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had once shared the anecdote of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's request for "a specific hair product" as posing on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
