Preparations for Trump-Putin Meeting Postponed Days Following Budapest Talks Proposed

There are "no plans" for US President Donald Trump to confer with Russian President Vladimir Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has announced.

Recently Trump stated he and the Russian president would meet in Budapest within two weeks to discuss the war in Ukraine.

A preparatory meeting between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the administration clarified the two had had a "positive" call and that a face-to-face session was not "required".

The White House withheld additional specifics on the reason the negotiations had been delayed.

Background Context

The US president had discussed a Hungarian meeting via telephone with Putin, a just prior to meeting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the White House.

Some reports claimed his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with insiders claiming Trump had urged him to give up extensive regions of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Russia.

However, on Monday the American president endorsed a ceasefire proposal endorsed by Ukraine and European leaders to halt the hostilities on the existing battle lines.

"Freeze the lines where it stands," he remarked.

Russia has frequently resisted against pausing the existing front lines.

Moscow was solely focused on "long-term, sustainable peace", Russia's foreign minister commented on Tuesday, implying that pausing conflict would simply constitute a temporary ceasefire.

Diplomatic Positions

The "fundamental issues" of the war required resolution, Lavrov stated, using Moscow's terminology for a set of maximalist demands that include the acceptance of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the demilitarisation of the country – a non-starter for Ukraine and its European partners.

Zelensky said talks regarding the front line were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to avoid diplomacy.

He also said the sole subject that could cause Russia to "take notice" was that of the supply of distance-capable munitions to Ukraine.

Strategic Factors

The Russian president's unscheduled call with the US leader last Thursday came ahead of reports that the United States was preparing to send long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine that could potentially strike inside Russia.

The Ukrainian leader stated it was the weapons consideration that had pressured the Kremlin to enter into dialogue. The discussion regarding the weapons systems had proven to be a "valuable contribution" in international relations", he remarked.
