Last year, star Jude Law remarked he “didn’t fear any repercussions” for portraying Vladimir Putin in a cinematic adaptation. The movie, however, could coincide too neatly with the mythologized image circulated by Russian state media that, domestically, it functions as a compliment rather than a critique.

The Crafted Strongman

For years, the Russian political apparatus and the country's entertainment industry have worked together to forge a made-to-measure persona of the president. This figure is a political superhero devoid of flaws, a former spy reframed as a local 007 who consistently understands beyond what he shows.

Screen-Based Support

A notable instance is a TV series released last October, directed by a pro-government filmmaker. Its main character is a invented security officer selected by fate to “save” the nation from disorder. Although he is called a different name, the implication is unmistakable: the hero must be a familiar security officer.

Western portrayals often end up buttressing this identical story rather than debunking it. A new film inspired by a bestselling satirical novel sets out to subvert the Putin cult by framing him not as a cause but as a consequence, shifting the focus to the spin doctors surrounding him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

In the film, Putin is presented as having been chosen by influential figures to stabilise the nation because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. The oligarchs approach him and all but beg him to become president. He replies is that he would rather govern from the background, desiring enduring influence.

This narrative is the Kremlin’s export myth: the cool, reluctant strategist guided by fate. Historically, these events ever happened.

The Truth Behind the Selection

No one actually pleaded with Putin to take the job. The presidency was in essence a selection process with no shortage of candidates. Central to this process stood a powerful businessman from the previous administration who planned to control the state de facto.

Interestingly, the move to framing him as a “spy” could partly have been inspired by the actor's arrival as James Bond. His harder interpretation led local outlets and social media to make comparisons with their leader. Edited images swapping the actor's likeness with Putin’s surfaced on city centers, feeding the growing tendency to frame him as a Russian 007.

A Propaganda Win?

With Jude Law, an actor popular with Russian audiences, the Kremlin will not miss the opportunity to portray this choice as a small victory. Its exclusion of mass protests, the political rivals, or key figures from its narrative, even though it includes recent years, is a welcome aspect for state propaganda.

Domestically, Putin is frequently an omnipotent figure who never appears on screen. His influence is signaled through portraits or orders from on high. Now, he finally acquires a famous actor's visage—one that could unintentionally validate the very myths it perhaps aims to examine.
