The beloved crime series AC-12 will make a comeback for its 7th season, confirmed by the BBC.
A brand new six-part season written by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the network.
Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."
The last series wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that drew in over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only arrived this week.
Series seven begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.
Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue working to combat corruption within the law enforcement.
Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case so far."
An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.
Yet, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the background, plot details hinted.
In a statement, the creator commented: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."
"It's an honor to have had countless followers watch the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be returning for a seventh installment."
He added: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."
Martin Compston described being part of the series as "a job of a lifetime".
"Beyond the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."
"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.
Vicky McClure remarked: "It goes without saying I'm so excited the show is back! Eager to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"
Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."
"Delighted with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected plot developments."
The drama launched in the early 2010s and became a highly successful television series of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Lennie James.
Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the new season will premiere.
The conclusion of season six drew the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and producers indicated at the moment there were no intentions for further series.
Nevertheless, the network announced on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
