The co-founders behind the famous frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has stated that parent company Unilever blocked the introduction of an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.

Ben Cohen, who established the business with his partner, announced how he plans to independently develop the controversial flavor within a personal series showcasing causes the company was barred from speaking out about.

Ongoing Dispute Between Founders and Parent Company

This latest announcement escalates the continuing tension between the internationally recognized ice cream maker and Unilever, the UK-based packaged goods giant that has owned Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.

Both founders maintain how Unilever and its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "honouring its social mission".

Watermelon Sorbet as an Emblem for Solidarity

Mr. Cohen stated via social media that he's developing a new watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting consumer ideas regarding naming options plus potential ingredients.

“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen stated in a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”

The watermelon has become an emblem for solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its colors, which closely resemble those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Historical Social Engagement plus Recent Developments

Several years ago, the ice cream company ceased sales of its products in areas under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company selling the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in disputed territories.

This upcoming dessert series is being created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious ice cream brand which was first created in 2016 for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return".

Leadership Changes plus Future Plans

The founder indicated that he plans to develop other frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues which the company was silenced from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.

The announcement comes after co-founder Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, following decades with the organization, mentioning worries regarding how the company's autonomy had been undermined following corporate moves to restrict its social activism.

At that time, Mr. Cohen stated that "Jerry has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was deeply distressing him."

"My heart compels me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for its independence so that the company can fulfill its ethical purpose, the principles that it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he told media outlets.
