NYC's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that was a central issue in his election bid.

A Traditional Abode

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.

But, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key issue, did not confirm his residency plans right away after his electoral win in November.

"This decision came down to our family's safety and the importance of focusing my full attention on implementing the affordability agenda voters voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.

A Fond Farewell

His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area famous for its diverse immigrant communities and culinary diversity.

"To the people of Astoria: thank you for exemplifying what is great about New York City," he expressed.

"While I may no longer live in Astoria, Astoria will forever remain a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he added.

Campaign Controversy

Throughout his campaign, Mamdani tied his central policy – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.

But his critics, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing although he came from a prominent family.

A House Not Always Used

Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his private home on the Upper East Side for his tenure, which concluded in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a venue for official events, and championed significant upgrades of the historic mansion.

A Grand New Home

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings very different than his previous Astoria home.

Featuring pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.

Internally, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated to reflect the home's historical period.

The compound, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also has enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors occasionally opened and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

His former home is rent stabilised, meaning the city regulates on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.

City residents see such units as valuable lifelines as the cost of housing rises faster than what many can afford.

Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
