The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure from Critical Role, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It features our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching personal histories for characters such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.
Overall, the opening looks amazing. However, I felt that something was missing in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition created by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one put out by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will love its presence.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the hype and energy that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when cast member the performer wrote words to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, Critical Role has already said that the series will have a few surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening appears as one of them.
This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from November 19. If you can't wait until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and the video site.
