The Showrunner Shares He Has a Plan for How Pluribus Will End... Currently.

Vince Gilligan never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed program reaching its finale—and a second season greenlit and underway—the creative team opened up about the viewer reception and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.

About the Incredible Viewer Reception

It would be easy to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. The creator is striving to avoid both.

“It's like being force fed something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it from others, and that's intentional. Never in my life searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by online forums.”

“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.

The Central Mystery: Will the creator See the Conclusion of Pluribus?

Considering the creative staff aren't taking cues by fan response, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… in a way.

“There are some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to throw out a solid concept for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

Alternatively, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.

“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”

Then again, why mess with the legendary finales?

“My dream is Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
