UK light heavyweight Joshua Buatsi made a winning yet unimpressive start to his career under recent management with a points victory over Parker in the Manchester arena.

The Olympic medal winner's activity level appeared to earn him a split decision in a tight 10-round fight at the Manchester venue.

But the challenger found success, delivering effective clean blows in a match where the styles failed to mesh, with excessive holding marring the action.

Two judges judged it 96-94 in favor to the winner, with the final judge a 95-95 draw.

"It wasn't my finest performance but how do champions respond? They prevail," Buatsi said in the arena as he was met by negative reactions from the spectators.

The Londoner returned to winning ways after his initial pro loss - an thrilling contest with his previous opponent in last winter - to earn a 20th pro success.

Several boxing experts believed Parker, thirty-one, should have been awarded the win but the Derbyshire fighter endured the second loss of his 28-bout professional journey.

His career development has stalled in the past few years through promotional disputes and long spells of inactivity.

Previously predicted as the future of British boxing, he now is positioned trying to fulfil that early promise - perhaps in what feels like a final roll of the dice - under recent support.

He began cautiously, with both competitors willing to be aggressive in a calculated opening few rounds.

The challenger, whose single earlier setback came at super-middleweight against John Ryder in 2022 after breaking his hand mid-fight, was making just his second appearance at the higher weight class.

By the middle rounds, Parker had kept it close, creating difficulties for the favorite, who operated with a solid defense to narrowly win the more effective stanzas.

The audience's tolerance diminished amid regular grabbing, with Parker going down multiple occasions during grappling.

The underdog finished the stronger, but many rounds were hard to judge. Although, former world champion the boxing analyst - providing analysis for the broadcast network - had it significantly in favor for the challenger, awarding Buatsi just one round.

Buatsi progresses, but with the presence of hard hitter David Benavidez, and Russian champion Bivol leading the category, the journey to titles - based on this performance - still looks steep.

Hatton Homage Inspires Manchester Derby Battle

Ricky Hatton tribute

In the supporting bout, Lyndon Arthur overcame Bradley Rea by divided decision in a outstanding local rivalry battle to secure the European light heavyweight title.

The stadium fell silent for a deeply poignant tribute prior to the bout as 10 bells rang in honor of Manchester's own Ricky Hatton, who passed away aged 46 in last month.

It was the initial significant broadcast match card in the location since Hatton's death. As the final chime faded, the quiet transitioned to a shout of "there's only one Hatton".

The action within the ring matched the sentiment. Arthur was floored by a left hook directly to the jaw in the initial stage, rising shakily to his feet on the count of eight.

But the traditional red equipment of the fighter soon pressed ahead again. From the other corner, the opponent - in rival City blue - was marked up early, noticeable damage forming under his orbital area as the duo landed hard punches.

The challenger, twenty-seven, landed power punches but Arthur, thirty-four, responded in kind with stinging uppercuts as the pace hardly diminished over the full distance.

The victor narrowly won the result with scoring tallies of 114-114, 115-113 and wider gap, but both fighters were persistent and full of heart, all the qualities their idol the legend stood for.
