Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.

Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
