Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the right to challenge specific decisions from the official, mirroring the system already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
